Indonesian maid vs Filipino maid in Malaysia: how to choose

“Should we hire an Indonesian or a Filipino helper?” is one of the first questions families ask us. The honest answer is that the individual matters more than the nationality. A caring, experienced helper is a good choice whatever her passport says.

That said, there are practical differences worth understanding before you decide.

Language and communication

Communication affects everything: following instructions, caring for children, and talking with an elderly parent. Think about which language your family — especially the person receiving care — is most comfortable using every day.

Food and household culture

Many Indonesian helpers are familiar with food that is similar to Malaysian home cooking. Many Filipino helpers are comfortable with a wide range of cooking styles, and many are willing to learn your family’s recipes. Cooking skill varies from person to person, so check each candidate’s actual experience.

Religion

Religion can matter for both the family and the helper. Muslim employers are generally required to hire Muslim helpers. Many Indonesian helpers are Muslim, and many Filipino helpers are Christian, but this varies. Tell your agency about religious and dietary practices at home — for example, whether pork is cooked, or whether there are dogs in the home — so candidates can make an informed choice too.

Experience

Both groups include first-time helpers as well as experienced helpers who have worked in Malaysia or other countries. When comparing candidates, look at:

  • The type of experience (newborns, toddlers, elderly care, cooking)
  • The length of each previous job
  • Why she left previous jobs
  • How she describes her daily routine in previous homes

Procedures and documentation

The recruitment procedures for each nationality are different. Indonesian placements follow procedures agreed between Malaysia and Indonesia. Filipino placements follow Philippine government rules in addition to Malaysian requirements, including verification of the employment contract. Requirements change over time, so ask your agency to confirm the current steps.

Salary, terms and packages

Salary, rest days and contract terms are set out in the employment contract and must follow Malaysian law and the requirements that apply to each nationality. Agency package prices and inclusions can also differ between nationalities. Compare packages carefully, in writing — see our maid packages.

So, which should you choose?

Start with your household’s needs, then choose the candidate who fits best. If you are unsure, ask for biodata of both Indonesian and Filipino candidates and compare them side by side at interview.
